History of Nainital

After the Anglo Nepalese war (1814-1816), Britishers took charge over Kumaon hills. Nainital was founded as a hill station in 1841 by Mr. P. Barron. Barron was a sugar trader from Shahjahanpur, he constructed the first European house in Nainital and thus the pristine beauty of the still water was given priority as a hill station so that people from across the globe can come and explore the beauteousness of nature.

Mr. P. Barron wrote that”It is by far the best site I have witnessed in the course of a 2,414kms travel in the Himalayas”. Soon, the town became a health resort favored both by British soldiers and by colonial officials and their families trying to escape the hot and sultry conditions of the plains. Later, the town also became the summer residence of the Governor of the United Provinces.

18th September 1880 was the most tragic day in the history of Nainital district because of a landslide that occurred at the north end of the down burying 151 people. Nainital faced landslide in year 1866 and 1879 as well but the landslip of 1880 in Nainital was more drastic than these. The houses were crumpled by the landslide burying people alive. The total numbers of dead and missing were 108 Indian and 43 British nationals.

The town was given the British look and European schools for boys and girls were established because Nainital became quite popular amongst the Britishers. Today Nainital is popularly known as Lake District because of the presence of mysterious five lakes.
